Frequent Questions : What is the registrar "whois"?

The registrar whois database is a searchable database maintained by registrars that details networks, networking organizations, domain names and the contacts associated with them.

The whois database encompasses all .com, .net, .edu and ISO 3166 country code top-level domains.

Protocol information is also included.  Protocols are a set of rules that instruct an application how to access a resource.  In this case the resource is the whois database.

Each registrar implements the Whois protocol and maintains a separate and distinct Whois database for its respective domain name registrations.

Select "Whois Lookup" from the "Services Management" menu of the Namestead control panel to run a whois search.  When prompted you should enter a fully qualified domain name like "namestead.com".
